Exit Device Trim Functions Explained
Outside trim is what people use on the pull side of an exit-device door. The panic bar always provides free egress from the push side; trim decides whether — and how — the door can be opened from the outside. Matching function to the use case avoids callbacks and code issues.
How trim works with an exit device
The exit device sits on the push face. Outside trim (lever, knob, pull, thumbpiece or blank plate) mounts on the pull face and drives the latch through the device’s trim interface. Trim is series-specific: order trim that matches the exit-device manufacturer and model family. Browse exit device trim once you know the device series and function.
Common trim functions

Exact naming varies by manufacturer (Von Duprin, Sargent, Corbin Russwin, ACCENTRA and others use their own function numbers). Always confirm the function code on the product page against the hardware schedule.
Rim, mortise and vertical-rod trim
- Rim & vertical-rod devices typically use escutcheon or plate trim with a through-bolt or spindle interface.
- Mortise devices support a wider function set because the mortise case carries the locking mechanism — see mortise exit devices.

Electrified trim and dogging
When access control is required, pair the device with electrified exit hardware (ELR, electric dogging) and compatible electrified trim or readers. Mechanical dogging (hex key or cylinder) holds the latch retracted during business hours on non-fire-rated devices; fire-rated openings generally prohibit mechanical dogging that defeats latching.
Finish and parts
